Fun Things to Do in Liverpool For Students
Our great city of Liverpool is home to over 70,000 students from around the globe, and there’s a good reason for that. In fact, there are many reasons Liverpool is one of the top choices for those students looking for their first taste of adult life.
Here is a whole heap of fun things to do in Liverpool for students.
The Cavern Club
Over the past 50 or so years, The Cavern Club has played host to some of the best in the music business. Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Adele and of course The Beatles, to name just a few, have all played the legendary venue over the years and if you’re going to live in our city, it’s almost mandatory to experience the club at least once! You can find The Cavern Club in the ever-lively Matthew Street, where you’ll also find The Beatles’ Statue and The Beatles museum!
The Albert Dock
The Docks offer a staggering number of things to do regardless of weather or time of day. First, we have some of the best restaurants in the city in the face of Lunyalita, Revolucion de Cuba, Smugglers Cover and many more. There’s no need to stop at a delicious meal either, stick around and check out swanky cocktail bars, electric nightclubs and picturesque pubs.
If you’re not looking to eat or drink, take a trip down to the docks for The Big Wheel of Liverpool for scenic views of the city and the Wirral. Each pod on The Big Wheel has a glass floor, luxury leather interiors, and you can even sip champagne on your way around. While you’re on the docks, why not hop on the ferry for a tour of the famous River Mersey and learn a little more about the waterfront.
Museum of Liverpool
The Museum of Liverpool casts an imposing figure over the River Mersey with its unique and once controversial architecture. The modern and unmistakeable building houses some of the city’s rich history and modern records. Not only is the museum a wonderful place to learn about the city, but it’s also free, which you may come to appreciate if your student loan begins to run out! You can find information on all of our city’s museums here: https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/museum-of-liverpool
Anfield and Goodison Park
As you may know, there are two rather popular teams in our city, Liverpool and Everton. Liverpool plays in their famous red colours at their home, Anfield. Whereas, Everton play in their stadium, Goodison Park in blue. Red or blue is the most popular and divisive question asked for scousers, and you may find yourself picking a side during your time in the city. Regardless of where your allegiance lies, you’d be missing out if you didn’t take a trip to the stadiums for a tour or, if you’re lucky enough, to catch a game.
The summer of 2016 marked the completion of the proposed transformation of the city’s historic Cains Brewery into a creative and social hub. The development cost an eye-watering £150m, but what now stands as proof of money well spent. There’s everything from an independent food market where local vendors set up shop to serve the finest food and drink in the country, bars with seasonal themes and activities such as Ghetto Golf, the alternative take on the classic family game of crazy golf. You’ll also find retro arcades, live music and local artists around the brewery. The modernised Cains Brewery will serve as the venue for many of your student days and nights out, and you can count yourself lucky for that alone. Here’s were you can find out whats on at the brewery: http://www.breweryvillage.com/
Liverpool Quizzes at Camp and Furnace
Don’t worry, this isn’t an extra university revision session. The quizzes at the Camp and Furnace are likely to bring a tear to your lecturer’s eye. The quizzes follow pop-culture themes like the tv show Friends, the film phenomenon Harry Potter and there was even one dedicated to Alan Partridge. Get a team together, book tickets to your favourite topic and head down to the most fun-filled test you’re likely to take. Expect dancing on the tables, insane prizes and a sore head the next day!
Live Music Events
With much thanks to The Beatles, Liverpool has developed into one of the leading cities for live music and talented musicians. You can find up and coming bands and artists playing across hundreds of pubs and venues on literally any night of the week. You’ve also got the luxury of the Arena on the docks, where you’ll find the biggest names in the music industry at various times throughout the year. There are also a few O2 academy venues throughout the city which prove very popular with students on a budget that want to have a beer and watch a new band!
Pool halls and bars have become really popular throughout the city for adults of all ages. Roxy’s stand out above the rest with pool tables, shuffleboards, ping pong, mini-golf, food and an enormous selection of craft beers, often brewed in the city. There’s no better place to start a night out, get together with friends and make some new ones as your student life begins!
The Floating Cinema
Yes, you heard that right, The Floating Cinema. In 2019, organisers at Independent at Liverpool collaborated with the Albert Dock to create a unique cinema experience on the docks. Audiences are welcomed with warm blankets, comfy seating, drinks and delicious snacks while you settle in and watch a classic movie. Some of the hits so far have been Juamanji, Mamma Mia and The Goonies. You’ll be hard-pressed to find another experience quite like this anywhere else.
So, you’ve started university, and you’re getting to know your classmates. How do you break the ice and get to know them a little better outside of the bars? Look no further than Mersey Games. We’re widely regarded as the provider of the best activity days in the North West. We provide fun indoor and outdoor activities for groups including obstacle courses, duels and many more one of a kind games. Here are some of their most popular games:
- The Bevvy Bungee Run – The clue is in the name. Take it in turns to try and carry a tray of drinks the furthest, while a bungee cord does it’s best to thrust you flying back home.
- The Derby – Face up against your new friend, old friend, girlfriend or lifelong enemy in this fight to the death. Ok, not to the death, but you get to dress up in a sumo suit and tackle each other until a winner has been decided. Eternal bragging rights are up for grabs in The Derby.
- The Scouse Duel – Much like The Derby, you take on one of your friends, only this time you’ve both got sticks shaped like the famous Radio City Tower, and you have to knock each other off of a pedestal in possibly the most hilarious game in existence.
- You’ll Never Walk Alone – Inspired by the chant you can hear at every Liverpool football match; this game involves taking on an obstacle course while tied to one of your friends.
Our games are ideal for any group and a day of laughter, hilarity and lifelong memories will send you back to your student accommodation happy. Check out the full list of games here: https://www.merseygames.co.uk/liverpool/outdoor-games/
This a real hidden gem in the city but is the perfect location for a chilled night out or a romantic date night. While it’s not in the city centre, it’s only a very cheap Uber ride away, and it really is one of the most unique and picturesque venues for a memorable night. On Lark Lane, you’ll find romantic restaurants, intimately lit coffee houses and fancy bars. It’s also a very popular place for students to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre with a good book and a coffee on those quiet days.
Brookhouse Pub offers one, fundamental reason to visit. A £1.50 pint. That’s right, a place exists in 2020 where you can get a pint of beer for the low price of £1.50. There is no better way to stretch that student loan to one more night out at those prices!
Liverpool is home to thousands of shops for everything from boutique dresses, hard to find books, antique jewellery and absolutely anything in-between. If fashion is your thing, the MetQuarter has some of the best designer stores on the market such as Hugo Boss, Kurt Geiger, Cricket and many more. Of course, Liverpool One is a popular choice among shopaholics, where you can shop the day away and then relax with a cold drink on the rooftop where you can find restaurants and bars. Don’t forget to take a trip up Bold Street and all the little side streets where you can find some unbelievable independent fashion stores for a design all of your own.
If you’re looking for some culture, why not check out one of Liverpool’s theatres? From the Empire to the Epstein, the Royal Court and the Philharmonic, there are too many venues to name, but each has its own unique beauty and rich history. The Philharmonic also has a pub of the same name across the road from it where people travel to experience the toilets. As weird as it sounds, they are pretty impressive, but we’ll let you decide that for yourself.
Take a Walk in the Park
We’re unbelievably proud of our beautiful parks in Liverpool. They also play host to many festivals, sports events, pop up cafes, drawing classes and much more. Sefton Park is a popular place to start with a picnic on a warm summer’s day, or even better for a chilly walk in the winter where you can stop off for a coffee on the way around its magnificent grounds. Also, keep an eye out for the music festivals held in the summer, the city comes alive when they’re on, and you don’t want to miss out on that opportunity during your time living in the city.
Our city loves an event, plain and simple. We love any reason to enjoy a spectacle with the backdrop of our beautiful city. When Bonfire night rolls around, be sure to catch the River of Light festival where organisers take a pontoon to the centre of the River Mersey full of fireworks and put on the ultimate firework display. Before the fireworks, there are always light shows, live music, and food and drink stalls too. It’s simply magical.
Christmas time is also an exciting time in the city. The L1 Christmas switch-on is incredible, as is the enormous LED Christmas tree that’s erected in the centre, it even has a karaoke bar inside it! We really go all out for Christmas, and the markets attract tourists from all around the globe.
Mersey Games have everything you need for a fun day out with your friends and acts as the perfect venue to have a right old laugh before hitting the town hard at night.
The evidence is clear to see with our 5-star Trip Advisor rating from over 300 customers that enjoyed our games and left with the memory of a hilarious day and often with a heap of equally hilarious pictures.
During your trip to our venue, you’ll have a guide to take you through all of our games, and you can choose which you want to take on. We’ll take photos for you to take away with you, so all you have to do is worry about taking on the games with your friends. We even award prizes at the end of the day!
We have changing facilities on-site meaning you can freshen up before you head off back to the city centre. We also have free parking on-site, so you don’t have to worry about transport. Although you may want to leave the car at home because we have a bar available to you once the games have finished so you can wind down and argue about who the winners were!
